Neither of those is a contractor in this trade. We will not dress one up — what carries over is the method, not the keyword set.

Most people never scroll past them. Which three is not luck, and it is not the biggest company — it is whoever has done this work.
The Fence Problem
A lot of fence companies fill a serious share of the schedule through Home Depot and Lowe's installed-sales programs. The work is steady, the leads arrive without any marketing, and the crew stays busy. It is an easy arrangement to build a business around.
It is also someone else's business. They set the price, so you take the margin you are given. They own the customer record, so the homeowner whose fence you built is their customer, not yours, you will not be the one they call in six years for the back yard. And the program terms are theirs to change. Regions get restructured. Contractor lists get trimmed. None of that comes with notice.
The fence companies with real margin have a second pipeline that belongs to them, and it comes from search. Not because search is trendy, but because fence demand is local, seasonal, and specific, three things organic search happens to be very good at.

What Homeowners Search
Here is the thing almost every fence company site gets wrong. It is built like a trade directory listing, home page, services page, contact page, maybe a gallery. But that is not how anybody looks for a fence.
They search the material and the reason. "Vinyl privacy fence cost." "Aluminum pool fence installation." "Best fence to keep a dog in." "HOA approved fence height." The material is what they picture, and the purpose is why they are shopping at all. Neither of those words is "fence contractor."
That gives you a grid instead of a list, every material crossed with every purpose, then multiplied by every town you serve. Each cell is a page. Almost none of your competitors have built any of them, which is why a Reddit thread currently outranks most of the agencies claiming to do fence SEO.
The Uncontested Part
Pool barrier codes and HOA rules are the two most overlooked sources of fence search in the trade, and they share a useful property: they are mandatory. A homeowner reading about pool fence height is not browsing ideas. They have a pool, they have an inspection coming, and the fence is not optional.
Those requirements vary by state and by municipality, the American Fence Association tracks how widely barrier standards diverge between jurisdictions, which is exactly why a national article can never answer the question and a local page can. That is the gap. National SEO blogs cannot serve this search. You can, for every county you work in.
Across the twelve results currently ranking for fence company SEO, coverage of pool code is zero. Not thin, zero.

What the Work Looks Like
Fence is seasonal in a way that changes the whole plan. Homeowners start searching in February. Most fence companies are booked out by May. So the material pages and the city pages have to be ranking before spring, which means they get built in late summer and fall, when the phone is quieter and nobody feels like doing marketing.
That is the trade-off worth naming out loud: the best time to start this work is the time it feels least urgent. Start in March and you are paying for content that will rank right about when your books close.
The build order is the same every time. The material × purpose pages come first because they carry the intent. City pages come next, because a fence company is a pure service-area business and city pages are where that gets decided, we published what that actually produced rather than asking you to take it on faith. Code and HOA pages come third, targeted to the jurisdictions you actually pull permits in.
Where This Fits
The phases below are the same for every contractor. What changes for fence companies is the emphasis and the calendar: the material and purpose matrix gets built out much further than a typical trade needs, and the whole timeline is pulled forward so it lands before February.
Objections
The questions that come up on almost every fence company call.
Yes, and it is the most uncontested opportunity in this trade. Pool barrier requirements are set by state and municipal code, they are mandatory, and they change by jurisdiction. A homeowner who just got a permit correction notice is not browsing, they need a compliant fence and they need it now. Not one of the twelve results ranking for fence company SEO covers pool code at all. A page per state or metro you serve, written against the actual code, is high intent traffic your competitors are not even bidding on.
Same mechanic, different trigger. HOAs dictate height, material, color, and which side the finished face points. Homeowners search those rules before they search for an installer, and the company that answered the rules question is the one they call. It is also a qualification filter, a homeowner reading your HOA page arrives already knowing what they are allowed to build, which shortens the estimate visit.
Some of them, yes. But the fence DIY searcher is not a lost cause the way a DIY oil-change searcher is. They start out planning to do it themselves, price the materials, look at a post-hole auger rental and forty linear feet of hillside, and a real share of them change their minds. Content that honestly explains what the job takes converts better than content that pretends the job is impossible, and it earns the links and the AI citations that pull the rest of the site up with it.
Fence is seasonal, so the timing question is really a calendar question. Homeowners start searching in February and most fence companies are booked out by May. That means the material and city pages need to be ranking before spring, not written in spring. Starting in late summer or fall puts you in position for the season that actually matters. Starting in March means you are paying for content that ranks after your books close.
Plenty of work is not the same as plenty of margin, and it is not the same as a business you control. Installed-sales programs set your price, own the customer record, and can change the terms or drop the region without asking. That is fine as one channel. It is a serious problem as the main one. The point of this work is not to replace that volume overnight, it is to build a second pipeline that belongs to you, so the program becomes a choice instead of a dependency.
Is this you?
Spring and early summer decide the year. The calls have to be in the pipeline before the phone should have rung.
Homeowners with a new pool have a deadline and a code requirement, and almost nothing online answers them.
A single subdivision contract beats a month of back-yard panels, and it is searched for differently.
If the only thing on the page is a price, price is the only thing they compare.
